Course Description

This course will focus on theories and methodologies of teaching reading as it applies to the major content areas. Pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading strategies will be explored along with different methods of teaching comprehension, vocabulary, word identification skills in the content area, fluency, and study skills. This course will also include techniques of teaching spelling, grammar, and writing as an integrated part of the content area. This course will meet once a week in the evenings and will include online activities and assignments. It is part of the core courses required for all students enrolled in the Master of Education program.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the theories of disciplinary literacy and be able to apply them to the classroom environment.
  2. Identify and implement teacher-directed reading strategies for aiding at risk, low socioeconomic and low self-esteem learners.
  3. Identify and implement teacher directed reading strategies for aiding students with special needs and struggling readers.
  4. Comprehend and implement practical forms of authentic assessment for the content area classroom.
  5. Understand and utilize various forms of web 2.0 technology aiding content area instruction.
  6. Understand the importance of using multiple resources in the classroom.
  7. Select form different activities that help shape the match between reader and the material to be read.
  8. Select and put into practice assorted methods for preparing and assessing the learner’s background knowledge.
  9. Choose and apply assorted methods for assisting the reader with comprehension and reflection in the content area.
  10. Be able to select among various methods for improving a learner’s study skills and organization ability.
  11. Utilize a variety of teaching strategies to increase a student’s understanding and use of words.
  12. Understand strategies for preparing, assisting, and reflecting on writing.
